The Great Figure Eight Tour (240km/150m)
Journey: Galway - Barna - Spiddal - Inverin - Rosaveel - Casla - Screeb - Maam Cross - Maum - Leenane - Letterfrack - Cleggan - Claddaghduff - Clifden - Galway.


Drive along the rugged area known as Cois Fharraige (Irish for 'beside the sea') and be sure to visit the Spiddal Crafts Village. Don't miss Kylemore Abbey, once a private residence now transformed into a school. On the drive is also the beautiful village of Leenane, backed by the Maamturk Mountains and facing Killary Harbour.

The Lough Inagh Drive (164km/102m)
Journey: Clifden - Ballyconneely - Roundstone - Toombeola - Derryclare Lough - Inagh Valley - Letterfrack - Cleggan - Claddaghduff - Clifden.


This is a superb drive, with bogs and beaches on either side. Just before Letterfrack, with its National Park, is famous Kylemore Abbey. The picturesque Derryclare Lake (pictured right) is close to the village of Recess along the N59, and should not be missed.

Corrib Country Tour (140km/88m)
Journey: Galway - Maig - Oughterard - Maam Cross - Cornamona - Clonbur - Cong - Headford - Galway.


This tour follows the 140km of shoreline around the great Lough Corrib, the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland. Dotted with small islands and framed by meadows and wooded shores, this drive provides superb photo opportunities. If angling is on your agenda, take a detour at the angling centre in Headford. The Burren Drive (200km/125m)
Journey: Galway - Oranmore - Clarenbridge - Kilcolgan - Kinvara - Belharbour - Ballyvaughan - Kilfenora - Lisdoonvara - Ennistymon - Lahinch - Liscanor - Doolin - Fanore - Ballyvaughan - Kinvara.

This drive leads to the limestone plateaux of the Burren with its natural and historical riches. The Burren is a gently sloping carboniferous limestone landscape, sectioned by many joints running from north to south. In addition to its rocky landscape, the Burren is famous for its unusual flowers.

The Historic Route (154km/96m)
Journey: Galway - Loughrea - Bullaun - Loughrea - Aughrim - Loughrea - Peterswell - Thoor Ballylee - Coole Park - Gort - Kilmacduagh - Kinvara - Kilcolgan - Clarenbridge - Oranmore - Galway.


For Cathedrals with stained glass windows, Celtic-style decorations, and ancient settlements, choose the Historic Route. Also not to be missed on this route is Thoor Ballylee, once the summer home of Nobel prize winning poet and playwright, W.B. Yeats, now transformed into a Yeats museum with tea-rooms and a gift shop.

The Mayo Experience (178km/112m)
Journey: Galway - Claregalway - Tuam - Milltown - Claremorris - Knock - Kiltimagh - Bohola - Foxford - Pontoon - Castlebar - Ballintubber - Ballinrobe - Headford - Galway.


For a leisurely drive around quaint little towns, framed by flat farmland, the Mayo drive is ideal. Visit the Foxford Woollen Mills, and take in the audio-visual history of the mills, followed by a tour. For further information on the tours, Tel: (096) 56756.

Spiddal Craft Centre
Located in picturesque Spiddal, on the Connemara Coast Road, it welcomes visitors not just as potential customers, but also to observe master craft people at work. Glendeer Open Farm
Located in the heart of Ireland in Athlone, this award winning family farm was recently featured on national television. There are deer, pot belly pigs, ponies, cows, sheep, peacocks and many other animals to be seen. There is also playground equipment for the children to play on while the adults enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. A great way to spend a relaxing and entertaining day with the family.
